Sapelo Island, Part III

Image
I know today is Thursday but I'm really anxious to get the last of my Sapelo pictures up so I can begin the sprawling series of posts that will cover Savannah! I'll begin with the evening of our second day and move into the last day and the ferry trip back to the mainland. After the morning trip to explore the southern end of the island, we rested up a bit and set back out in the late afternoon.  Rather than taking the bikes we chose to walk because somebody (as in, NOT me) was too sore and tired to ride.  So we walked.  Okay, fine by me, I walk all the time.  In fact, it has become blatantly obvious to me that my definition of "walking distance" comes nowhere near a normal person's definition.  Five miles and under = walking distance in my mind.   Anyway.  So we set out to explore more of the northern and the western part of the island.  We started out and the first thing we came upon was this scene:   What you don't see is that there we

Throwback Thursday-Super Short!

Since I haven't put up any embarrassing pictures of me in a while (well, that's debatable-they're all kind of embarrassing), I thought I'd throw out a few more!  This will be very short as I'm much more focused on my Sapelo and Savannah stuff. So when I last posted baby pictures I used them to illustrate how habits/traits develop early.  Well...I have a couple more!  Love of dogs/animals.  There were dogs in our house from the day I was born.  In fact, I can't think of a time in my life where we/I haven't had at least one dog.  As you'll see in other pictures, I've had a variety of pets but dogs have been the one constant.  This is Duke our diabetic dalmatian (alliteration!).  My parents got him when they were stationed in North Dakota so he'd been around a bit before I came along.  He actually decently contributed to the University of Georgia's Veterinary Medicine program's research into canine diabetes as little was known about i

Finally!  Between changing platforms and just preparing more pictures (taking lots of time but I'm learning TONS about Photoshop, though I try to avoid heavily editing most pictures) it feels like it has taken forever to post something new. So I feel like this should be subtitled the birds and dead sea creatures entry.  There are lots of bird pictures-and a few dead sea creatures, though not as many as I originally thought.  I guess when you take four pictures of the same jellyfish it seems like so many more!  Yes, I find nature fascinating-dead or alive-as some have the (dis)pleasure of knowing.  I am one of those few people who could actually stare at a jellyfish floating in a lab all day, observing its behavior and noting any changes.  And be excited about it! But anyway...on to the pictures!  I'm pretty sure most of these came from our second day and only full day on the island.  They are pretty much just snapshot quality but there are a couple that are kind of cool.  W

Sapelo Island, Part I

I have been here before,           But when or how I cannot tell:      I know the grass beyond the door,           The sweet keen smell, The sighing sound, the lights around the shore. ~ Sudden Light, Dante Gabriel Rosetti I don’t know what it is about the Georgia coast that lures me in.  I have no childhood attachment.  I’ve visited other beaches and coastlines in various locations with no connection.  But there is something about this place that is peaceful, comfortable, familiar…  I’ve never been to Sapelo Island before.  Our visits typically include Savannah and some time on Tybee, the neighboring barrier island.  In the spirit of something different, we chose to visit Sapelo this year.  Sapelo is a small barrier island owned almost entirely by the state of Georgia and accessible only by ferry.  Commercially, the University of Georgia Marine Institute takes up much of the south end of the island.  We avoided most of that.  The only full-time residents liv
